(CNN) — India is set to surpass China as the world’s most populous nation, with almost 3 million more people by the middle of this year, data released by the United Nations on Wednesday showed.Based on the projections, India’s population by mid-year will reach 1.4286 billion, compared to China’s 1.4257 billion — 2.9 million fewer — according to the United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA) “State of World Population Report” for 2023.UN officials have said it is not possible to determine the exact date for the shift, due to “uncertainty” about the data coming from China and India. India’s last census was in 2011 and most recent, scheduled in 2021, was delayed during the Covid-19 pandemic. The United States is a very distant third, with an estimated population of 340 million, the data, which reflects information available as of February, showed.By 2050, eight countries will account for half the projected growth...Ultrarunner disqualified from race after using a car to complete part of the course

(CNN) — Scottish ultramarathon runner Joasia Zakrzewski has been disqualified from a 50-mile race after traveling in a car for a section of the course.Zakrzewski, who initially finished as the third woman in the race, was competing in the GB Ultras Manchester to Liverpool event in England’s northwest on April 7 when organizers said she gained an “unsporting, competitive advantage” which would have compromised the integrity of the results. The 47-year-old Zakrzewski told the BBC she made a “massive error” in accepting the third-place trophy and “should have handed it back,” adding that she was “tired and jet lagged and felt sick” during the race having arrived from Australia the night before. She said she became lost around the halfway mark and her leg became sore, after which she accepted a ride in a friend’s car to the next checkpoint, according to the BBC.“When I got to the checkpoint, I told the...Dartmouth coach Teevens has leg amputated after bike crash

MILFORD, Conn. (AP) — A 26-year old man who used a sword to attack two men in Eastern Connecticut before going on a crime spree that included killing a former classmate and kidnapping a woman before during a multistate manhunt was sentenced Wednesday to 55 years in prison.Peter Manfredonia pleaded guilty in February to murder, kidnapping and other charges in the shooting death of Nicholas Eisele, 23, and the kidnapping of Eisele’s girlfriend.Friends and family of Eisele wore T-shirts to Milford Superior Court emblazoned with his photo inside a heart with words reading “As long as I breathe you’ll be remembered. Justice for Nick.”Manfredonia apologized separately to the Eisele family and kidnapping victim Shannon Spies.“There are no words that can possibly atone for what I have done. My actions were nothing short of reprehensible,” he said. “What I did was inexcusably horrendous and I will regret it every day for the rest of my life.”Manfredonia has also pleaded guilty to...MBTA weighing month-long nightly Blue Line shutdowns to address speed restrictions

The MBTA is leaning toward shutting down the Blue Line each night at 7 for a month to remove the line’s remaining speed restrictions, work the general manager said would otherwise take six months with normal overnight track access.General Manager Phillip Eng said Wednesday that the T is planning to lift seven of the 21 remaining speed restrictions by the end of May. By sticking to typical overnight track access, from 1-3 a.m., it could take the agency until the end of November to remove the remaining slow zones, he said. The MBTA considered shutting down Blue Line service at 9 p.m. for two months to accelerate that work — by allowing crews three additional hours of track access per night — but is looking at a more aggressive plan that would speed up the remainder of the line in a month, Eng said.“We wanted to try and see if we could do a little better here,” Eng told the T’s Board of Directors. “So we’re looking at starting at 7 p.m. That would give seven hours of opportunity for act...Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa considered retirement after multiple concussions in 2022

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, in his first organized press conference since his 2022 season was cut short due to a second stint in concussion protocol, admitted Wednesday that he gave retirement some thought at the end of the past season.Tagovailoa, ultimately, opted against it, and he is set to return to the Dolphins for a fourth NFL season in 2023, plus at least a fourth after Miami picked up the 2020 first-round pick’s fifth-year option on his rookie contract.“I considered it for a time, having sat down with my family, having sat down with my wife and having those conversations. “But, really, it would be hard for me to walk away from this game with how old I am, with my son. I always dreamed of playing as long as I could to where my son knew exactly what he was watching his dad do.“It’s my health. It’s my body. And I feel like this is what’s best for me and my family. Giancarlo Stanton is back where he’s spent a good chunk of his Yankee career: the injured list. The 33-year-old was placed on the 10-day IL after pulling his hamstring jogging into second base in Saturday’s 6-1 win over the Twins. The expectation is that Stanton will be out at least four-to-six weeks. The 2017 NL MVP has experienced a plethora of injuries, mainly to his lower body throughout his pinstripe tenure. When you’re carrying a credit card balance, paying at least the minimum due each month is certainly a start. If those payments aren’t making your overall budget feel squeezed, you have all the more reason to put payments on autopilot and not think about the total cost of your debt.“Our pace of life has gotten really busy,” says Delia Fernandez, a certified financial planner and the founder and president of Fernandez Financial Advisory LLC in Los Alamitos, California. “There’s always something that’s more important, particularly for these people who are not in a financial crisis.”But that inertia can cost you, especially with average credit card interest rates reaching 20.4% as of November 2022, according to the Federal Reserve. NerdWallet’s 2022 American Household Credit Card Debt Study, conducted by Harris Poll, found that U.S. households with revolving credit card debt are paying an average of $1,380 in interest this year. There is good news, though: Dedicating even a small amount ...Latest news
