Recalled applesauce that sickened kids may have been contaminated on purpose

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:18:30 GMT

Recalled applesauce pouches that left many children sick with lead poisoning may have been tainted on purpose, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Jim Jones, FDA deputy commissioner for Human Foods, said the investigation is still ongoing, but signs point to an intentional act to poison the puree. “We’re still in the midst of our investigation," Jones said in an interview with Politico. "But so far, all of the signals we’re getting lead to an intentional act on the part of someone in the supply chain and we’re trying to sort of figure that out."Three recalled applesauce products may have been deliberately tainted with lead, according to an FDA official. (FDA via AP)Weis, WanaBana and Schnucks are three of the brands found to have contaminated pouches. All have ties to a manufacturing facility in Ecuador, which is now under inspection by the FDA.Jones told Politico he thinks the facility didn't believe the contaminated applesauce would have ended up in countries...

Visitors to the Hammer Museum’s Made in L.A. 2023: Acts of Living are greeted in the expanded lobby by the extraordinary site-specific monumental painting Paradise Lost—a masterpiece of modern muralism by painter Devin Reynolds. Its orchestration of strong, delicate lines, interlocking pictorial planes, shifting visual styles, symphonic blues, and the expressive architectures of urban surrealism sets an example of how the personal and historical intersect in the biennial exhibition’s total ethos. Reynolds’ use of pointed texts offers commentary on and references to impactful events amid this vibrant collision of perspectives and narratives. The reality and fantasy of the whole reflects the character of life in Los Angeles, with all its inherent contradictions, cultural influences, contested histories, soft skies and hard edges, joys and beauties.Devin Reynolds: Paradise Lost. Draymond Green has reportedly begun receiving the “help” that Jusuf Nurkic and others say he needs. The Warriors forward has begun counseling, according to NBA reporter Shams Charania, and will be out for at least the next three weeks.Green was suspended indefinitely by the league last week after striking Nurkic in the face during a game between the Warriors and the Suns, his third ejection this year and second for undue physicality. The NBA, the Warriors and Green’s representation agreed that the four-time champion would work on himself before being allowed to return to the court for Golden State, general manager Mike Dunleavy said last Thursday.Green’s suspension is about more than the Nurkic incident and his chokehold of Minnesota’s Rudy Gobert earlier this season. Feed holiday crowds with affordable, marinated eye round or a side of salmon

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:18:30 GMT

Holiday parties often call for feeding crowds all at once, so this year we offer two impressive main courses that make that easy. They are as good at room temperature as they are hot from the oven. For a beef option, we challenged ourselves to transform a thrifty, low-cost cut of beef into a lush, celebratory meal. The answer was eye round, a roast often deemed too lean to be tender. To roast this tough cut and get succulent, perfectly cooked results, we marinated the meat in ingredients that would do the work for us — starting with a sticky, sweet puree of prunes. That may sound unusual, but prunes are high in hygroscopic sorbitol and fructose, which — along with salt and soy sauce — amplify the way the meat absorbs flavor. The sugars in the prunes and ketchup create a nicely caramelized crust, while the salt and soy sauce provide seasoning that flavors the meat. Anchovies also may be unexpected, but they add rich umami notes.A whole side of salmon also is an excellent choice — and r...
