Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:00:41 GMT

The collapse of a critical dam along the Ukrainian front line on Tuesday is expected to have wide reaching implications for Russia’s war on the country, affecting energy, food and water supplies, displacing a major civilian population and raising the risk of a nuclear disaster.  Drone footage published on Tuesday captured water rushing through the remains of the Nova Kakhovka reserve and dam in Russian-held Ukraine, sparking mass evacuations, accusations of blame from both sides and emergency meetings of Ukrainian and Western officials.Ukraine has accused Russia of blowing up the Soviet-era dam “in panic,” as Kyiv appears to be starting its long-expected counteroffensive, while the Kremlin has implied that Ukraine is to blame and that it was a terrorist attack. The United States said it was looking into the collapse and “closely monitoring the impacts” but “cannot say conclusively what happened at this point,” according to White House National Security Council spokesperson...

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:00:41 GMT

Albany, N.Y. (News10)- The hazy skies are making for incredible views of the sun, but the smoke pushing in from raging wildfires in Canada is now diminishing air quality in states well below the northern border. Dr. Nick Bassill, PhD is the Director of research and development for UAlbany's Center of Excellence in Weather and Climate Analytics. “When we say particulate matter that’s just a fancy word for little pieces of ash." Bassill told News10 that on a good day those particulates are in the single digits. “On a day like today, it’s above 100. And that’s very, very unusual for the Capital Region area. And in parts of New York, it’s actually above 200.” He said that's why you may feel like it’s tougher to breathe outside today. Bassill showed News10's Anya Tucker an office at the campus's ETEC building called the Mesonet. It is an intelligence center of New York’s Early Warning Weather Detection system, data collected from stations across the state is shared publicly to help ...

Colorado plastic surgeon charged in teen patient’s death points finger at nurse as jury trial begins

A Colorado plastic surgeon charged with manslaughter in a teenage patient’s death should not be held criminally responsible because a nurse was actually at fault, the doctor’s attorneys argued at the start of his jury trial Tuesday.Dr. Geoffrey Kim, 54, is charged with manslaughter and negligent homicide in the death of 19-year-old patient Emmalyn Nguyen. The Brighton teenager went to Kim for a breast augmentation surgery in August 2019, when she was 18, but she suffered cardiac arrest after receiving anesthesia, fell into a coma and died 14 months later, in October 2020.Kim resuscitated Nguyen with CPR after her cardiac arrest, but then failed to call for emergency help for five hours even though she needed immediate care at a hospital, which was better equipped than Kim’s outpatient surgery center, prosecutors with the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office said during opening statements Tuesday.“Not only does not call 911 himself, but (Dr. Kim) tel...

MIAMI — Michael Porter Jr. is long past the point where compliments need to be spoon-fed or hurt feelings coddled. At this point, tied 1-1 in the NBA Finals as the series shifts to Miami ahead of Wednesday’s Game 3, he knows any personal agendas are immaterial or, even worse, distractions.“It’s just about winning, bro,” Porter told The Post. “At this point, where we’re at, we don’t have time for dudes to be in their feelings.”Least of all Porter, who played only 5 minutes, 39 seconds, of the fourth quarter in Game 2 after his 3-point stroke abandoned him, and his defensive lapses, whether via miscommunications or effort, left the Nuggets vulnerable from the perimeter. Through two games, Porter’s shot just 3 for 17 from the 3-point line. Defensively, he was involved in several inexcusable breakdowns as Miami torched Denver from the 3-point line. Before Tuesday’s practice, the Nuggets held a frank film session where head coach Michael Malone encouraged his players to talk through their ...
