The San Jose Sharks keep losing. Here’s why they feel there’s better days just ahead

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 06:22:07 GMT

The San Jose Sharks lost their ninth straight game to open the season Sunday. But to coach David Quinn and a few of his players, this one felt a little bit different.Welcoming center Mikael Granlund back to the lineup after a seven-game absence, the Sharks hung into the puck longer, improved their forecheck and breakouts, and created a few more scoring chances – at least more than they had earlier on their road trip and during their season-opening homestand. The result, though, remained the same, as the Sharks allowed third-period goals to Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson before they gave up an empty-netter to Evgeny Kuznetsov in a 3-1 loss to the Washington Capitals.Mackenzie Blackwood was terrific in net as he made 39 saves. But as had been the case in seven of the Sharks’ first eight games, their goalie needed to be perfect for them to earn their first win of the season. With the one goal, a first-period marker by Luke Kunin, the Sharks (0-8-1) became the ninth team in NHL history, and ...

SANTA CLARA — There was a point this season when the 49ers looked unbeatable. Now, it’s hard to remember how they ever won a game.Humbling comes easy in the NFL. It arrived fast for the 49ers.After starting the season with five straight wins — four of them blowouts — the 49ers will head into their bye week with a three-game losing streak, a second-place standing in the NFC West, and plenty of bad vibes. And after Sunday’s 31-17 loss to the Bengals, fans should be worried that the 49ers’ best football is behind them this season. Not only is this team falling apart physically, but the Niners also have serious problems at the top of the football operation. The two core tenets of winning in the NFL are solid coaching and prudent quarterback play.If your team has both, you will consistently be one of the NFL’s better teams. But the last three weeks — all losses — the 49ers have lacked both. And there’s no guarantee the solid coaching or quarterback play returns after the bye week, eithe...

And we’re still growing,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said. After struggling for long stretches against the best defense in the NFL, Smith was sensational on Seattle’s final drive. LUCKNOW, India (AP) — India extended its perfect run and defending champion England continued its dreadful slump at the Cricket World Cup, undone this time by an opening spell of pace bowling from Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah.India’s pace spearheads snared seven wickets between them to propel India to a 100-run win Sunday, bowling England out for 129 in 34.5 overs. That came after India had posted a seemingly meagre 229-9, with Rohit Sharma contributing 87 from 101 deliveries. Host nation India leads the 10-team standings with six wins from six games, two points ahead of South Africa and four clear of Australia and New Zealand.
