Missouri Senate committee considers removing restrictions on fentanyl tests

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 15:40:59 GMT

Fentanyl test strips are easily accessible over the counter in many states, but Missouri is not one of them.Missouri’s statute categorizes anything used to test or analyze drugs as drug paraphernalia, which makes illegal the possession of fentanyl tests, which can be used at home to test drugs and medication for fentanyl contamination.Senate Bill 480, sponsored by Sen. Holly Thompson Rehder, R-Scott City, and heard Monday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, would add an exception to the statute to legalize the test strips.Overdose deaths from synthetic opioids, of which fentanyl is the most deadly, have risen dramatically in recent years. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services reported that over 2,000 drug-related deaths occurred in Missouri in 2021, and of them, about 70% involved a synthetic opioid.According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, to reduce costs, drug manufacturers mix fentanyl with other drugs including heroin, methamphetamine, and cocaine...

Presidential primary would return under bill approved by the Missouri House

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 15:40:59 GMT

The House gave initial approval Monday to a bill that would reinstate the presidential preference primary in Missouri. The bill was amended to establish that the primary will take place on “the first Tuesday after the first Monday in April.” As introduced, the bill would have ordered the primary to be held on “the second Tuesday after the first Monday in March.”Rep. Michael O’Donnell, R-St. Louis, proposed the change. He said the intent was to save money and increase participation in municipal elections, which are held annually in April.Rep. Peggy McGaugh, R-Carrollton, said holding both elections at the same time raises a concern that non-partisan municipal elections could be turned into partisan elections because a voter would have to ask for a party ballot in order to vote in the municipal election.“The same candidates will be on every ballot,” O’Donnell said in response, adding that the non-partisan elections would continue to be non-partisan.Representatives discussed whether the...

By DAVID BAUDER, RANDALL CHASE and GEOFF MULVIHILL (Associated Press)WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Fox and Dominion Voting Systems reached a settlement Tuesday in the voting machine company’s defamation lawsuit, averting a trial in a case that exposed how the top-rated network chased viewers by promoting lies about the 2020 presidential election. An attorney for Dominion said the settlement was for $787.5 million.“The truth matters. Lies have consequences,” said Dominion lawyer Justin Nelson in a news conference outside the courthouse after the announcement.Dominion had asked for $1.6 billion in arguing that Fox had damaged its reputation by helping peddle phony conspiracy theories about its equipment switching votes from former President Donald Trump to Democrat Joe Biden. Fox said the amount greatly overstated the value of the Colorado-based company. The resolution announced in Delaware Superior Court follows a recent summary judgment ruling by Judge Eric Davis in ...

Denver mayoral runoff poll shows Mike Johnston and Kelly Brough in statistical tie

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 15:40:59 GMT

Seven weeks before Denver’s mayoral runoff election, the first public poll of the matchup between Mike Johnston and Kelly Brough shows the candidates in a statistical dead heat — with plenty of undecided voters to win over. The poll, conducted last week by a bipartisan team, suggests that Johnston, a former state senator and the former leader of Gary Community Ventures, has a slight edge, with support from 38.9% of likely voters in the city’s June 6 runoff election. Brough, the former president and CEO of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce and a former chief of staff to then-Mayor John Hickenlooper, had support from 34.1% of poll respondents. That left 27% undecided. The difference between the candidates’ support levels was within the margin of error of plus or minus 4.8 percentage points, making it a statistical tie.“It’s still anyone’s race,” says a summary document for the poll, first reported by Axios Denver. It was conducted of 410 likely run...

The man who authorities say tracked down his stolen car in Denver, then shot and killed a 12-year-old boy inside it, previously was arrested in Maryland on impersonation charges after being stopped while driving a Ford Crown Victoria equipped with emergency lights and a siren, according to records obtained by The Denver Post.A Denver police search warrant names Jack Reed, 35, as the man who shot and killed 12-year-old Elias Armstrong while the boy sat in the driver’s seat of Reed’s stolen car on Feb. 5.Police determined someone in the car fired shots during the confrontation, and said the boy was killed in an “exchange of gunfire.” Denver District Attorney Beth McCann declined to press criminal charges against Reed.Records obtained by The Post show Reed was frustrated by the tepid police response to his stolen vehicle that night — telling dispatchers he was armed and had to act because police would not — and was once criminally charged with making...
